Basketball Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups and current player Terry Rozier are among the people who will appear in federal court this week for status hearings in their illegal gambling cases, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.
At least 30 people in all will be in Brooklyn court as prosecutors and defense lawyers discuss legal filings and discovery items.
Billups, then coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, and Rozier, a guard for the Miami Heat, were arrested in October.
Billups was placed on indefinite leave by the NBA. He last appeared in court in November when he pleaded not guilty to charges of wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy.
Billups, 49, was accused of conspiring with the mafia to rig illegal poker games. He allegedly helped lure players into games where high-tech equipment allegedly was used to cheat them out of millions of dollars.
After one crooked poker game in October 2020, for example, prosecutors said Billups received a $50,000 wire from the scheme's mob-affiliated organizers.
Billups played 17 years in the NBA, winning a championship as the Finals MVP with the Detroit Pistons in 2004. The five-time All-Star guard entered the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2024.
Billups coached the Trail Blazers to a combined 117-211 (.357) record in his first four seasons from 2021-22 to 2024-25. He also coached Portland to a loss in this season's opener before being arrested early the following morning.
Rozier pleaded not guilty in December to wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges for his alleged role in an illegal sports gambling scheme. He has since requested that his case be dismissed.
Among the incidents alleged against Rozier is that he informed co-defendant Deniro Laster he would fake an injury and make an early exit from a game in March 2023. Laster then allegedly sold that information to a gambling ring and more than $200,000 in wagers were placed in prop bets predicting Rozier would underperform statistically.
Rozier did indeed leave the contest early, playing just 10 minutes before claiming he had a foot injury.
The Heat weren't initially paying Rozier after he was placed on administrative leave but an arbitrator ruled last month that he is due his $26.6 million salary for this season.
Rozier, whoi turns 32 on March 17, has averages of 13.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 665 career games (381 starts) with the Celtics (2015-19), Charlotte Hornets (2019-24) and Heat.
Boston Celtics guard/forward Jaylen Brown (illness) is not listed on the injury report for Wednesday's matchup with the Charlotte Hornets. The MVP candidate skipped the first game of the week on Monday against Milwaukee due to illness. Brown has tallied 26.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game since the All-Star break. His return to the lineup will bump Hugo Gonzalez back to the bench, while Derrick White and Payton Pritchard will be less involved in the offense.
Cleveland Cavaliers forward Dean Wade (ankle) will miss Tuesday's game against the Detroit Pistons. Tonight's contest will be the third in a row that the 29-year-old has been out of action due to a sprained right ankle. His next opportunity to suit up is Sunday against Boston. With Wade still on the shelf, Jaylon Tyson will continue to carry a heavier workload during this evening's matchup.
Washington Wizards forward/center Anthony Gill (illness) has been ruled out ahead of Tuesday's game against the Orlando Magic. Gill will miss both legs of the back-to-back set due to a lingering illness. The Wizards are extremely banged up at the center spot, so Gill has been playing big minutes lately. Given the injuries, the Wizards are likely going to use a committee approach to fill the void at center. Will Riley, Julian Reese, and Justin Champagnie should all see increased playing time on Tuesday. Among the three, Riley is likely going to be the most consistent streaming option for Tuesday's slate.
Dallas Mavericks forward Caleb Martin (back) will play on Tuesday against the Charlotte Hornets, Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News reports. Martin is dealing with a sore lower back but is ready to make a second consecutive appearance. After missing one game because of his back issue, Martin played well on Sunday against Oklahoma City, leading his team with 18 points in 30 minutes. With P.J. Washington (ankle) back in the lineup, Martin could be pushed to the bench on Tuesday night, which would be a blow to his fantasy prospects.
Dallas Mavericks guard/forward Cooper Flagg (foot) will remain out on Tuesday, Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News reports. The talented rookie will miss an eighth consecutive contest. It has been nearly a month since Flagg last played, but his return from a midfoot sprain could be near, as he was initially listed as doubtful on the injury report. Flagg's absence leaves Brandon Williams and Ryan Nembhard in charge of playmaking, with Max Christie, Khris Middleton, and P.J. Washington (ankle) serving as the primary scoring options.
Orlando Magic center Wendell Carter Jr. (ankle) is ruled out ahead of Tuesday's game against the Washington Wizards. Carter was a late addition to the injury report and will now officially sit out due to left ankle soreness. This is the first time that Carter has missed a game since the middle of January. This season, Carter is averaging 11.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists across 29.8 minutes per game this season. Moritz Wagner and Goga Bitadze figure to split up the extra minutes during Tuesday's game. His next chance to play will come on Thursday, so fantasy managers will need to check back ahead of that game.
Dallas Mavericks guard/forward Klay Thompson (adductor) is unavailable for Tuesday's matchup with the Charlotte Hornets. Thompson sustained a right adductor contusion in Sunday's 100-87 loss to OKC and exited after just 15 minutes on the floor. With Thompson sidelined, extra minutes will be available for AJ Johnson and veteran Khris Middleton. Johnson logged six points, four rebounds, four assists, and one steal in 22 minutes on Sunday, and he has been one of the most productive Mavs lately as the team deals with multiple injuries in the rotation.
Dallas Mavericks forward P.J. Washington (ankle) has been cleared to return to the lineup on Tuesday against the Charlotte Hornets, Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News reports. Washington has battled ankle issues all year, with the most recent one keeping him out of action for three games. The 27-year-old has enjoyed a solid season on a struggling team, averaging 14.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. On Tuesday night, Washington may be more active on the offensive end, as Dallas will be without Cooper Flagg (foot) and Naji Marshall (finger), two of the team's top three scorers.
According to Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel, Orlando Magic guard Anthony Black (quadriceps) has been downgraded to unavailable for Tuesday's game against the Washington Wizards. Black will miss his second straight contest due to a right quadriceps contusion. The 21-year-old is having an excellent season, averaging 15.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists across 31 minutes per game. His next opportunity to return will come on Thursday against Dallas. With Black still sidelined, Tristan da Silva and Jevon Carter could see additional scoring opportunities in this appealing matchup versus Washington.
Dallas Mavericks forward/center Marvin Bagley III has been ruled out for Tuesday's game against the Charlotte Hornets. Bagley has missed three consecutive contests due to a neck sprain. His next chance to return is on Thursday against the Orlando Magic. While Bagley remains sidelined, Dwight Powell will likely continue to take on additional frontcourt minutes. In the 34-year-old veteran big man's last outing, he recorded nine points, nine rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal in 21 minutes during Sunday's 100-87 loss to OKC. However, Powell isn't a strong streaming option, as he typically sees fewer than 15 minutes per game.
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell (abdomen) is unavailable for Tuesday's matchup with the Chicago Bulls. The 23-year-old will miss his 18th consecutive game due to an abdominal strain and a left ankle sprain. His next opportunity to return will come on Wednesday against the New York Knicks. However, there is still no clear timetable for his return, so a potential appearance tomorrow evening appears unlikely. Through 43 games this season, Mitchell is averaging 14.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.4 steals across 26.3 minutes per contest.
Brooklyn Nets center Nicolas Claxton (thumb) has been cleared to play in Tuesday's matchup with the Miami Heat. Claxton missed Sunday's 106-102 loss to Cleveland due to a right thumb sprain, but the injury won't keep him out of the lineup this evening. The 26-year-old is having a decent season, averaging 12.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks. Claxton is still a dependable fantasy contributor, although he is expected to continue to see less playing time as Day'Ron Sharpe has emerged as a solid frontcourt option for the Nets.
Washington Wizards forward Kyshawn George (elbow) was able to play through a knee contusion on Monday in the first game of his team's back-to-back, but he exited in the third quarter with an elbow sprain, which will keep him on the sidelines on Tuesday against Orlando. George has played very well when at full strength, but he has dealt with multiple injuries over the last several weeks. Without him on Tuesday, Will Riley should continue to get plenty of opportunities, withTre Johnson and Bilal Coulibaly also getting more chances to contribute on the wing in this tough road game in Orlando.
Washington Wizards center Tristan Vukcevic (thigh) will miss a second straight game after also not playing on Monday versus the Rockets. The 22-year-old has been effective when available while filling in for Alexandre Sarr (hamstring), but will not be a fantasy option on Tuesday. Anthony Gill (illness) will also miss a second straight game, leaving more work for the recently signed Julian Reese, who played 28 minutes in his season debut on Monday, totaling two points, four rebounds, and three steals. Will Riley and Justin Champagnie will also likely get more usage in the frontcourt, where the Wizards will remain especially short-handed for the matchup with the Magic.
Dallas Mavericks forward/center P.J. Washington (ankle) was upgraded from questionable to probable on Tuesday afternoon and will likely return for this matchup against his former team. He has missed the last three games, and his return will be important for the Mavericks, who will likely be without Cooper Flagg (foot, doubtful), Naji Marshall (finger, out), Marvin Bagley III (neck, out), and Klay Thompson (adductor, doubtful). Washington could be one of the team's primary options on offense, along with Max Christie, but Washington may need to ease back in after missing three games with the injury. He does have a very high ceiling in the potential revenge game, though, and his team will need him to carry as much work as possible.
Dallas Mavericks guard/forward Klay Thompson (adductor) was downgraded from questionable to doubtful for Tuesday night against the Charlotte Hornets. Thompson suffered a right adductor contusion in Sunday's loss to Oklahoma City and left after only 15 minutes. He looks likely to miss Tuesday's game due to the injury, which would leave more minutes for AJ Johnson and veteran Khris Middleton. Johnson managed six points, four rebounds, four assists, and one steal in 22 minutes on Sunday, and he has been one of the most active Mavericks lately as the team deals with multiple injuries in the starting lineup.
Miami Heat forward Andrew Wiggins (toe) was a late addition to the team's injury report before Tuesday's game against the Nets with bilateral knee tendinitis. He is probable but will likely play through the pain this Tuesday, but he could have a reduced workload, especially if the game gets lopsided. Any addition this close to tip-off deserves watching closely, especially when the Heat are involved. If Wiggins misses time or has a lighter workload, Simone Fotecchio, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Pelle Larsson could pick up more work and be solid contributors, especially since plenty of usage is already available with Norman Powell (groin) also sidelined.
Orlando Magic guard Anthony Black (quadriceps) was probable for Tuesday's matchup but was downgraded to questionable before tipoff. He is trending in the wrong direction while dealing with his right quadriceps contusion, but he still has a chance to play through the issue against Washington. He missed Orlando's last game, and Jalen Suggs returned to the lineup in his spot. If Black returns to action on Tuesday, Tristan da Silva seems the most likely player to slide to the second unit. Black has had a very strong season, breaking through for 15.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in 31 minutes per game. If he's forced to miss a second straight game, da Silva and Jevon Carter would likely pick up more work in this favorable matchup against Washington.
Philadelphia 76ers guard/forward Kelly Oubre Jr. (illness) was a late addition to the injury report and was downgraded to out on Tuesday, as his team starts their back-to-back set of games with a home game against the Spurs. Without Oubre, more minutes will likely be available for Quentin Grimes and Jabari Walker on the wings. With Joel Embiid (oblique) also out, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Dominick Barlow will carry more of the offense, while Grimes could end up a strong option for DFS and streaming usage on Tuesday night. When he has gotten big workloads in the past, Grimes has shown good upside.
Memphis Grizzlies guard/forward Cedric Coward (knee) is listed as questionable for Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 22-year-old rookie could return to the lineup after missing seven games with a right knee injury. Despite battling some consistency issues, Coward has had a good rookie campaign, averaging 13.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists across 26.3 minutes of play. If Coward is cleared for action, there could be fewer minutes available to Walter Clayton Jr. and Rayan Rupert.
