Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa admonishes late attendees at players-only meetings

Field Level Media

The Miami Dolphins' repeated failure to win close games, such as Sunday's 29-27 home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, can change by cleaning up a lot of things, even small details, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said.

Tagovailoa cited, as an example, attendance at the player-led meetings during the week that are not mandatory nor involve coaches.

"I think it starts with the leadership in helping articulate that for the guys and then what we're expecting out of the guys," he said when asked after Sunday's game how players keep from feeling sorry for themselves after yet another heartbreaking defeat.

"We're expecting this -- are we getting that? Are we not getting that? We have guys showing up to players-only meetings late, guys not showing up to players-only meetings," he continued. "There's a lot that goes into that. Do we have to make this mandatory? Do we not have to make this mandatory? So it's a lot of things of that nature that we got to get cleaned up. It starts with the little things like that."

The quarterback clarified that he was referring to players being late for players-only meetings - sessions which show them giving extra time and effort toward improving themselves and the team.

The Dolphins have started the season 1-5, with the lone victory over the winless New York Jets, 27-21 in Week 4 to stay out of last place in the AFC East.

They had started slowly in 2024 at 2-6 before winning six of their last nine games to finish 8-9. The Dolphins have descended after a 9-8 campaign in 2022 and an 11-6 mark in 2023 qualified them for the AFC wild-card round for consecutive seasons.

Miami has been outscored by opponents 174-134 this year. However, after a season-opening 33-8 blowout loss at Indianapolis, the Dolphins have lost by six, 10, three and two points -- and were within one score in the final two minutes in each of those setbacks.

Sunday's game in Miami Gardens might have been especially painful. Tagovailoa's 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Darren Waller gave Miami a 27-26 lead with 46 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Tagovailoa, who completed 21 of 32 passes for 205 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions, went 7 of 7 for 57 yards on what the Dolphins hoped would be the game-winning drive.

But Nyheim Miller-Hines returned the ensuing kickoff to the Los Angeles 41 and, on the Chargers' second play of the drive, Ladd McConkey caught a screen pass from Justin Herbert, shook off a tackler and sped 42 yards to the Dolphins' 17-yard line to set up Cameron Dicker's 33-yard field goal with 5 seconds left.

Tagovailoa was picked off by Derwin James Jr. on a desperation pass in Miami's final possession as time expired.

Afterward, Tagovailoa said he was "shocked" by the loss and pointed at himself for mistakes such as the three interceptions contributing to the loss, then focused on next week's game against the Cleveland Browns.

The sixth-year quarterback, a Pro Bowl selection in 2023, talked about figuring out the problems, such as turnovers, and fixing them as a team, studying game film and finding better ways to play.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel, when asked Sunday about his quarterback airing out issues that reflect on team culture, said Tagovailoa, 27, is being a leader sending a message to other players.

The player-led meetings are "extra things outside of what I demand," the coach said.

"We've been very accountable to me," McDaniel said. "It sounds like there was something on his mind with regard to the specific meetings with a couple individuals that he was trying to get corrected by being direct with communication. I think that's the only way to lead.

"As far as where we've been at as a program, I think we've opened the air on all of that and it's very clear how we hold people accountable and what's non-negotiable with all those things," the coach continued. "Clearly, he's sending a message, but from my standpoint, everything that I've asked of the guys, they have delivered on. I'm sure whomever he's talking to, they'll deliver as well as he's a direct communicator with his teammates."

Player Notes
Rashee Rice Oct 13 8:40am CT
Rashee Rice

Senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reports that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice's six-game suspension is now over, and he is eligible to play Sunday versus the Las Vegas Raiders. Rice was serving a six-game suspension for pleading guilty to two third-degree felony charges of a collision involving serious bodily injuries and racing on the highway, causing physical injury. With his suspension ending, the Chiefs' offense should reach a new level. They have reported that they consider Rice their clear No. 1 option and have not entertained trade offers for other players at the position, knowing he is set to return in Week 7. With the Chiefs starting to get all of their playmakers back in action, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes playing at an MVP level, the Chiefs' offense should continue to produce at a high level for fantasy managers. Although exciting news, fantasy managers should temper expectations with Rice out of the gate, as it's likely he will get ramped up and not provide WR1 production right away, but assuming he plays in Week 7, he has WR3/Flex appeal against the Raiders.

Emeka Egbuka Oct 13 8:20am CT
Emeka Egbuka

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka (hamstring) is getting an MRI on Monday and is expected to miss "some time," according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. He also reported that it does not seem as bad as teammate Mike Evans' (hamstring) injury that has kept him out since Week 4. Egbuka left the game in the third quarter of Sunday's 30-19 win over the San Francisco 49ers and was ruled out later in the contest. Before exiting, Egbuka hauled in two of his four targets for 24 yards. The Buccaneers offense continues to take a massive hit offensively, with Evans, Chris Godwin (fibula), Bucky Irving (shoulder/foot), Jalen McMillan (neck), and now Egbuka all missing time. The Buccaneers have weathered the storm because quarterback Baker Mayfield has been playing at an MVP level. Still, with all of these offensive playmakers out, Mayfield will likely have to rely on Sterling Shepard, Tez Johnson, Cade Otton, and Kameron Johnson in Week 7.

Geno Smith Oct 13 1:43am CT
Geno Smith

Las Vegas Raiders QB Geno Smith completed 17 of 23 pass attempts for 174 yards, one touchdown, and one interception during the team's win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 6. Smith also ran four times for minus-three yards.

Fantasy Spin: Smith's season-long issues with turnovers continued in Week 6 as he threw his NFL-leading 10th interception -- the veteran also initially looked to have a fumble returned for a touchdown, but officials reversed the call to an incomplete pass on review. The veteran has really struggled in his reunion with Pete Carroll, albeit with top target Brock Bowers (knee) injured or absent for most of the year. While there's apparently no thought of benching Smith for Kenny Pickett, he's at the very bottom of QB2 consideration right now, and might be better viewed as a QB3.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Samaje Perine carried the ball six times for 16 yards versus the Green Bay Packers in Week 6. He also caught two passes (on three targets) for 16 yards.

Tyler Warren Oct 13 12:20am CT
Tyler Warren

Indianapolis Colts tight end Tyler Warren caught six of his nine targets for 63 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's Week 6 win over the Arizona Cardinals. The rookie has been quite impactful during his first pro season, ranking as the overall TE2 through six weeks. He has at least 14 fantasy points (PPR) in each of his last three games, which is one reason for his surge into the No. 2 spot. He fits nicely in the Colts' offense as a physical threat in the passing game, and we've also seen him run the football from time to time. Fantasy managers should have no hesitation about starting him as a mid-range TE1 in Week 7 against the Chargers.

Taysom Hill Oct 13 12:13am CT
Taysom Hill

New Orleans Saints TE Taysom Hill had a one-yard touchdown run against the New England Patriots in Week 1. It was his only carry of the game.

Fantasy Spin: Hill, who scored 21 touchdowns over the past three years, has not been used much in two games under new head coach Kellen Moore. He did score on Sunday, however, and his positional eligibility at tight end seems to perennially make him a possible lottery ticket play. Barring an increased role, the downside will remain substantial.

Brandin Cooks

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks had one reception for 21 yards on his lone target during a Week 6 loss to the New England Patriots.

Ashton Jeanty Oct 13 12:10am CT
Ashton Jeanty

Las Vegas Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty carried the ball 23 times for 75 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown during Sunday's Week 6 win over the Tennessee Titans. He also caught two of his four targets for an additional 11 receiving yards. While fantasy managers will be rightfully intrigued by the rookie's volume and touchdown, there continues to be some concern about his efficiency (or lack thereof) as he was held to just 3.26 yards per carry against the Titans, bringing his season average down to 4.04 YPC. Jeanty's road gets tougher in Week 7 as he faces the Kansas City Chiefs. In that matchup, the Boise State product is best viewed as a mid-to-low fantasy RB2.

Jameson Williams Oct 13 12:10am CT
Jameson Williams

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams caught six of his seven targets for 66 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's Week 6 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. He led the team in receiving yards and put an end to what had been a frustrating few weeks for the deep threat. Over the last three weeks, Williams had failed to surpass 6.5 fantasy points (PPR) in a single game. He scored nearly triple that number on Sunday night, giving him momentum ahead of a Week 7 clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He's a high-ceiling, low-floor WR3/flex every week.

From RotoBaller

Patrick Mahomes Oct 13 12:00am CT
Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 22 of his 30 pass attempts for 257 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions during Sunday night's win over the Detroit Lions. He also rushed for an additional 32 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. The veteran quarterback had a very productive evening in terms of moving the football and scoring points, now tallying 10 total touchdowns and just one turnover over his last three games. Most importantly, the 30-year-old seems to have found a nice rhythm under center, scoring at least 29 fantasy points in each of those three contests. He'll remain a high-end QB1 for Week 7 against the Raiders.

From RotoBaller

Marquise Brown Oct 13 12:00am CT
Marquise Brown

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquise Brown caught all four of his targets for 45 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's Week 6 win over the Detroit Lions. Brown has quietly emerged as a solid WR3/flex play this season, scoring at least 8.0 fantasy points (PPR) in all six of his games so far. Sunday's victory was his fifth game this season (of six total contests) in which Brown had at least four catches, as well as his fourth with at least 42 receiving yards. It's hard to predict which Kansas City receiver will get the bulk of the volume during any given week, but Brown has certainly been a steady fantasy contributor so far. He's a mid-range WR3/flex option for Week 7 against the Raiders.

From RotoBaller

Kyren Williams Oct 13 12:00am CT
Kyren Williams

Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams carried the ball 13 times for 50 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown during Sunday's Week 6 win over the Baltimore Ravens. He also caught each of his two targets for a total of 37 receiving yards. Williams didn't nearly match his fantasy total from the week prior on Thursday Night Football, but he still contributed with a touchdown and a solid receiving stat line. He has multiple catches in each of his last five games, as well as four touchdowns over his last four contests. He should continue to be treated as a low-end RB1 heading into Week 7 against the Jaguars.

Detroit Lions LB Alex Anzalone finished with a team-high 12 tackles, including seven solo stops, in a 30-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6.

Amon-Ra St. Brown Oct 12 10:53pm CT
Amon-Ra St. Brown

Detroit Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown caught nine of his 10 targets for 45 yards in a 30-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6.

Fantasy Spin: St. Brown was busy against Kansas City, but he was unable to deliver any big plays. As a result, he tied a season low in receiving yards while tying a season high with nine receptions. St. Brown has seen at least seven targets and at logged at least seven catches in five straight games, and the steady workload gives him a high floor, especially in PPR contests.

From TheHuddle

Travis Kelce Oct 12 10:43pm CT
Travis Kelce

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce registered six receptions for a game-high 78 yards on seven targets in Week 6 against the Detroit Lions.

Fantasy Spin: Kelce's receiving yardage was a season best. He has four or more receptions in five in a row, and he is averaging 6.5 grabs across the past two starts. If you thought Kelce was falling off, reports were greatly exaggerated. Kelce might not be a top-tier TE1 anymore, but he is easily still Top 10 at his position. He'll look to keep up the good work against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7.

From TheHuddle

David Montgomery Oct 12 10:43pm CT
David Montgomery

Detroit Lions RB David Montgomery gained 24 yards on four carries and caught two passes for 37 yards in a 30-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6.

Fantasy Spin: Montgomery finished with his fewest number of carries and touches of the season, but unless more information comes to light, fantasy owners shouldn't overreact. Montgomery has regularly been logging 10-plus touches a game and had a season-high 19 touches just last week.

From TheHuddle

JuJu Smith-Schuster Oct 12 10:43pm CT
JuJu Smith-Schuster

Kansas City Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster posted three receptions for 57 yards on three targets in Week 6 against the Detroit Lions, and he was involved in a fracas at the end of the game which might result in disciplinary action from the league.

Fantasy Spin: Smith-Schuster was shoved in the face by Brian Branch of the Lions, overshadowing the game a bit. Smith-Schuster isn't likely to be suspended for his actions in the on-field disagreement, but a fine could be coming. He remains useful only in deeper fantasy leagues heading into Week 7 against the Las Vegas Raiders, and he'll have even less fantasy value going forward once Rashee Rice returns from suspension.

From TheHuddle

Kareem Hunt Oct 12 10:33pm CT
Kareem Hunt

Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt ran six times for 23 yards in Week 6 against the Detroit Lions, while posting a single 11-yard reception on a lone target.

Fantasy Spin: Hunt entered the game a little dinged up, so that's likely why he took a bit of a backseat behind Isiah Pacheco. The difference in yards per carry were negligible, as Hunt had 3.8 YPC, and Pacheco had 4.3 YPC. Hunt remains an RB3 or flex fantasy play heading into Week 7 against the visiting Las Vegas Raiders.
