Dallas goes big, Colts snag Sauce in epic NFL trade deadline

Tue Nov 4 4:59pm ET
Field Level Media

Trades hit fast and furious at the NFL trade deadline, driven by contenders losing daylight and the overwhelming taste of disappointment in New York.

Big names and bigger contracts were guided to iighted exits by the Jets, ushered to teams with pressing needs and aspiring playoff hopes.

General manager and holder of the Cowboys' checkbook Jerry Jones put his signature on a pair of swaps designed to make Dallas' defense better. At 3-5-1, the unit can't get any worse -- well, it technically can but rates next-to-last ahead of only the Cincinnati Bengals in total defense and points allowed.

As the dust settles on an active deadline, we dole out some honorary recognition. There will be no actual trophies handed out.

--Back to the Future Award: New York Jets

Credit the Jets for noticing the fuel gauge went to "E" long before Week 9, the most productive days of the season for coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey by a landslide.

All told, the Jets scored three first-round picks, a second-rounder, former first-round pick Mazi Smith and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell.

Applaud the hard reset. Applaud the plan. Brace yourself for the execution when we begin measuring progress of the impending rebuild.

Our doubt sprouts from Mougey's indecision about the identity of his defense and the linchpins tasked with anchoring the group.

Sauce Gardner was the No. 4 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He's gone barely three months after signing a four-year, $120.4 million contract extension.

Quinnen Williams went third overall in 2019 and was a first-team All-Pro in 2022. He still has two years on his contract after this season and is universally viewed as one of the top talents at the position.

Maybe seven losses in eight weeks brought frustration to a boiling point and there was a mandate from owner Woody Johnson to clear the decks.

Mougey steps into the NY pressure cooker as the most important figure in the Jets' rebuild with four draft picks in the first two rounds in 2026 and a pair of first-rounders in 2027.

The Jets would have the No. 3 pick in the 2026 draft based on today's standings (Tennessee and New Orleans have eight losses).

All of a sudden, there are few building blocks on the roster -- WR Garrett Wilson stands out -- but newfound capital to expedite a construction project more massive than it was yesterday. A silver lining in the erasure of blue-chip, foundation players is the approximately $117 million in cap space available in 2026 when the Jets go from seller to shopper.

--Circus, Circus Award: Dallas Cowboys

Another day, another dose of drama under the big top at Jerry World.

For a franchise in 11th place in the conference, the Cowboys made quite a racket on Tuesday with trades for linebacker Logan Wilson (Bengals) and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (Jets).

No doubt Williams is a difference-maker. In his physical prime and long a target of Jerry Jones' appreciation, acquiring Williams improves the Cowboys instantly.

What we won't know for the immediate future is whether Jones' rage bait roulette move in August was erased or underscored by Tuesday's deal.

Micah Parsons wanted to stay. He's three years younger than Williams and plays a more premium position. Effort and production were never questions when No. 11 suited up for the Cowboys, and that was every single time he was physically capable.

Parsons was traded to the Packers in a deal we still doubt as coherent from a franchise-building perspective.

But if we follow the bouncing ball, will Jones' stack of assets equate to a long trade win? He surely believes it will.

At present, he's flexing a tremendous defensive line tandem -- Kenny Clark from the Packers and Williams -- and still has one of the two first-round draft picks (2026) netted from Green Bay.

Does any or all of the sum push the Cowboys closer to a Super Bowl? Jury is out. They've lost head-to-head to the Bears and Panthers, two of the three teams between the Cowboys and the seventh playoff spot, and will play the Vikings (4-4) and Lions (5-3) before the NFC postseason picture develops.

Williams should be raring to go by the time he hits the field in Las Vegas on Nov. 17. He went from the bye week Jets to Dallas, where the Week 10 bye has only begun.

--Giddy Up Award

Colts general manager Chris Ballard spent the better part of his tenure in Indianapolis on the wrong end of the horseshoe.

Let's review the timeline of trauma inflicted under Ballard's watch.

In 2018, Ballard hired a head coach that left him at the altar. Didn't show up. Ghosted before ghosting was a thing. Josh McDaniels did not get a holiday greeting from the Ballards. That Jan. 28 verbal agreement with McDaniels came after he flamed out with an 11-17 record with the Broncos and was built around the idea that the franchise would have a healthy Andrew Luck at quarterback plus the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 draft.

When McDaniels decided to stay and presumably be coach-in-waiting for Bill Belichick with the Patriots (he wasn't), Ballard went with Frank Reich.

And after a 1-5 start, Luck went on a tear with 30 TD passes and nine wins in 10 games. The Colts won a playoff game -- at Houston, 21-7 -- then lost to the Chiefs (31-13) about 11 months and two weeks after Ballard hired McDaniels.

And Luck ran out. To retirement. Never to play in the NFL again.

By 2022 late owner Jim Irsay had seen enough, punting Reich to hire former glory days center Jeff Saturday -- who snapped the ball to Peyton Manning -- out of the ESPN NFL broadcasting studio as interim head coach. He went 1-7, losing seven in a row to end the season.

For some reason, Irsay kept Ballard and they collectively selected Shane Steichen as head coach in 2023. Again armed with a top-five draft pick and determined to find a QB, the trio pushed their chips to the center of the table and bet it all on freaky Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson with the fourth overall selection in the '23 draft.

Richardson wasn't the answer.

First-round picks have generally been a lost cause for the Colts since that No. 3 pick in '18 was used on road-grading guard Quenton Nelson. That's enough of a failure to get the plugged pulled on most GMs.

Back at a crossroads in March 2025, Ballard ... somehow wasn't fired.

He set aside his gratitude journal long enough to commit to adding "competition" for Richardson. The one-year, $14 million pact with Daniel Jones panned as a marginal threat to Richardson proved pure gold. He's piloting the No. 1 offense in the NFL, reinvented as Danny Dimes with an All-Pro sidekick in running back Jonathan Taylor.

Another signing in free agency in March, Charvarius Ward looked the part of No. 1 cornerback before a concussion sent him to injured reserve. He's still expected to return. Ward, 29, signed a three-year deal with Indianapolis.

When he returns, he'll be a co-No. 1 in the secondary with Sauce Gardner, acquired for two first-round picks from the Jets on Tuesday.

Gardner was the No. 3 pick in the 2022 draft and Defensive Rookie of the Year. He fills a need as a playmaker, and Ballard has finally -- as it appears today -- turned luck in his favor with the need at quarterback erased.

With the team packing for Germany and a Week 10 game in Berlin, the Colts (7-2) are the No. 1 seed in the AFC, control their destiny in the division and beyond and Ballard has time to tap the brakes to refill the bandwagon for Indy's first playoff appearance since 2020.

Five Fantasy Takeaways: Week 9

Player Notes
Darnell Mooney Nov 4 4:00pm CT
Darnell Mooney

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Darnell Mooney was a non-factor again in Week 9's 24-23 loss to the Patriots, earning just two targets, which resulted in one catch for 15 yards. It was the second straight game with one reception and the third time this season. The 28-year-old played every single offensive snap on Sunday, so his lack of production is all the more glaring. So far this season, the veteran receiver has registered 0.15 targets per route run, putting him in a range with the likes of Matthew Golden and Rashod Bateman. Aside from an 11-target, four-catch performance in Week 3, the 5-foot-11 wideout has tallied a total of eight catches on 16 targets for 129 yards and no scores in the five other contests in which he played. Whether it is his injury history piling up or Michael Penix Jr. simply sticking to shorter routes -- or a combination of both -- Mooney doesn't look startable in fantasy leagues right now. A favorable matchup on paper awaits Mooney in Week 10 against a beatable Colts pass defense, but Tuesday's addition of Sauce Gardner from the Jets should enhance their ability to defend the pass.

Jacory Croskey-Merritt Nov 4 3:50pm CT
Jacory Croskey-Merritt

Washington Commanders rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt has struggled over the past month after a hot start to the season. The rookie has recorded 51 carries for 151 yards, no touchdowns, and a lost fumble while adding just three receptions (five targets) for nine yards in his past four games. Croskey-Merritt was outproduced by third-year back Chris Rodriguez Jr. in Washington's blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. Rodriguez could be earning his way back into a more prominent role on early downs while veteran Jeremy McNichols handles the pass-down responsibilities. Croskey-Merritt has been held below four yards per carry in each of the last four games and has a longest run of just 11 yards in that time. Now, with star quarterback Jayden Daniels (elbow) out for an extended period of time, the Washington offense as a whole takes a significant hit. Croskey-Merritt doesn't catch passes, and now that the explosive runs have dried up, it's left fantasy managers with a disappointing result. After a promising start to his career, Croskey-Merritt looks more like an RB3/RB4 option than the potential league winner he appeared to be earlier in the year.

Luke McCaffrey Nov 4 3:50pm CT
Luke McCaffrey

The Washington Commanders have placed wide receiver Luke McCaffrey (shoulder) on injured reserve after suffering a broken collarbone during the opening kickoff of their blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. McCaffrey has been an impactful kick returner and made multiple splash plays on offense this season, but is now expected to miss the remainder of the 2025 season. The second-year wideout out of Rice had the third-highest yards per kick return (29.6) and scored three touchdowns on only 11 total receptions as a receiver. The Washington Commanders have been wiped out by injury this season, especially at wide receiver. Veteran Deebo Samuel Sr., rookie Jaylin Lane, and the recently signed Treylon Burks will all be expected to see an increase in targets over the second half of the season.

From RotoBaller

A.J. Brown Nov 4 3:30pm CT
A.J. Brown

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown is not to be traded by Tuesday's trade deadline, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. This was fully expected as a trade of the Eagles' superstar wideout was never a realistic proposition. Brown missed Philadelphia's Week 8 matchup against the Giants, but had his best game of the season in the last game he played against Minnesota in Week 7, catching four of six targets for 121 yards and two touchdowns. The 28-year-old will remain an Eagle for at least the remainder of the 2025 season, but trade rumors will likely pick back up during the offseason.

From RotoBaller

Devin Neal Nov 4 3:20pm CT
Devin Neal

New Orleans Saints rookie running back Devin Neal has seen an uptick in snaps over the past two weeks with Kendre Miller (knee) out for the season. Neal played 39% of the snaps in the Saints' Week 9 loss at the Rams, handling three carries for 11 yards and catching one of four targets for one yard. The sixth-round rookie out of Kansas has now played a combined 49 snaps in Weeks 8 and 9, but has only seven total touches. Neal was also outcarried by Taysom Hill, who rushed for 30 yards on four carries. Veteran Alvin Kamara (ankle) was questionable heading into Sunday after being limited in practice all week, and he also saw a season-low seven touches. The Saints played from behind for the majority of this game, and it was disappointing to see Neal not be emphasized more. The rookie still feels like the best handcuff option in New Orleans, but it's a bleak offensive situation, and Hill will presumably stay involved. Neal can likely be left on waivers for Week 10.

From RotoBaller

Treylon Burks Nov 4 3:00pm CT
Treylon Burks

The Washington Commanders are signing wide receiver Treylon Burks to their active 53-man roster on Tuesday, a source told Ben Standig. Burks will return to the active roster after making his 2025 debut with the Commanders in the Sunday night loss to the Seattle Seahawks, where he played 51% of the offensive snaps and caught his only target for a gain of 14 yards. The 25-year-old former first-round pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2022 out of Arkansas will have an opportunity for an expanded role moving forward, with Terry McLaurin (quadriceps) unlikely to play in Week 10 against the Detroit Lions, and with Luke McCaffrey (collarbone) potentially out for the year. Still, fantasy managers should temper expectations for Burks, as the Commanders could be without starting quarterback Jayden Daniels (elbow) for the rest of the year, too. In three seasons in Tennessee, Burks was injured more often than not while posting a 53-699-1 line in 27 games (17 starts).

Garrett Wilson Nov 4 2:50pm CT
Garrett Wilson

SNY's Connor Hughes reports that New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson (knee) is "untouchable" in trade talks at Tuesday's deadline. The Jets traded All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday for two first-round picks and wideout Adonai Mitchell, so receiver-needy teams were wondering if Wilson might be available as well. It's "not the case with Wilson." The Jets also sent defensive lineman Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys for a first-rounder in 2027, but it appears they are going to hang onto Wilson and running back Breece Hall despite another lost season. The 25-year-old Wilson hasn't played since hyperextending his knee on Oct. 12 in London in a loss to the Denver Broncos, but he's expected to practice this week, giving him a chance to return this Sunday against the Bengals. Despite missing several games due to injury and playing in a bad Jets offense, Wilson ranks as the WR10 in half-PPR scoring this year with 13.6 fantasy points per game.

From RotoBaller

Devaughn Vele Nov 4 2:40pm CT
Devaughn Vele

The New Orleans Saints shipped wide receiver Rashid Shaheed to the Seattle Seahawks at Tuesday's NFL trade deadline, meaning that Devaughn Vele will have a shot at WR2 duties for the Saints, starting in Week 10 against the division-rival Carolina Panthers this Sunday. Veteran Brandin Cooks should also see an expanded role behind No. 1 Chris Olave. Still, despite the expected playing-time boost for Vele, he's probably only worth a waiver-wire pickup in deeper fantasy leagues in a Saints offense that is averaging just 15.3 points per game, which is second-worst in the NFL. Vele played 29% of the offensive snaps in the Week 9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams and wasn't targeted at all by rookie quarterback Tyler Shough in the passing game. The former seventh-rounder by the Denver Broncos in 2024 out of Utah has five catches for 39 yards and one touchdown in his eight games in New Orleans this year.

From RotoBaller

Dyami Brown Nov 4 2:30pm CT
Dyami Brown

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Dyami Brown (concussion) could be in line for more targets in a Week 10 game against the Houston Texans this Sunday, with rookie first-rounder Travis Hunter (knee) on Injured Reserve and Brian Thomas Jr. (ankle) nursing a high-ankle sprain. However, the 26-year-old is going to first need to clear the league's concussion protocol to get the green light to play this weekend. Brown suffered a concussion in Sunday's overtime win over the Las Vegas Raiders and finished with three catches for 25 yards on seven targets. Meanwhile, Parker Washington led the team in receiving. Brown is worth a look off the waiver wire heading into Week 10 for fantasy managers desperate at the position, but keep in mind that Thomas could suit up against Houston, and Tuesday's acquisition of wideout Jakobi Meyers adds more competition for targets for Brown if he plays. Brown is rostered in only 3% of Yahoo leagues right now and has just 19 catches for 219 yards and one TD in seven games.

Ricky Pearsall Nov 4 2:20pm CT
Ricky Pearsall

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that wide receiver Ricky Pearsall's (knee) return timeline "remains fuzzy," per Matt Barrows of The Athletic. Shanahan said that Pearsall will be evaluated in the middle of the week to see whether he can return to practice as the team begins preparations for a big Week 10 divisional contest against the Los Angeles Rams this weekend. Pearsall has not played or practiced since spraining his PCL in the Week 4 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and while the Niners aren't counting him out to return this Sunday, a "fuzzy" timeline shouldn't make fantasy managers optimistic that the former first-rounder will play against the Rams. And if Pearsall does suit up in Week 10, he'll likely be on some sort of snap count, which would make him a big risk in starting fantasy lineups. If Pearsall doesn't play this Sunday, his next chance to return would be in Week 11 for another divisional tilt against the Arizona Cardinals.

From RotoBaller

Chris Olave Nov 4 2:00pm CT
Chris Olave

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave hauled in three of four targets for 57 yards in the Week 9 loss to the Rams. His four targets marked a season low, though his 14.25 yards per target were a season high. Olave had built strong chemistry with Spencer Rattler before the second-year quarterback was benched, and with Tyler Shough now at the helm, the two will be forced to find their rhythm quickly. Olave ranked second in the league in targets from Weeks 1-8 under Rattler, making him the clear focal point of the passing game. With Rashid Shaheed, who saw nine targets in Week 9, being traded to the Seahawks, Olave is expected to assume an even larger role, assuming he isn't moved before the trade deadline as well. The Saints will visit the Panthers in Week 10, where Olave should be treated as a WR2 with upside.

From RotoBaller

Tre Tucker Nov 4 2:00pm CT
Tre Tucker

Las Vegas wide receiver Tre Tucker is now the de facto #1 wideout for a Raiders team that dealt Jakobi Meyers to the Jaguars on Tuesday. While tight end Brock Bowers will be the clear focal point of this offense as long as he's healthy, Tucker is the most likely candidate to benefit from Meyer's vacated 6.9 targets per game. Newly acquired veteran Tyler Lockett also has familiarity with head coach Pete Carroll and was on the field for nearly a third of the team's offensive snaps in his first game as a Raider. Meanwhile, rookie wide receivers Jack Bech and Dont'e Thornton have both struggled to hold onto any meaningful role. Thornton was a healthy inactive for Sunday's loss to the Jaguars, while Bech was relegated entirely to special teams. Even with Bowers back and healthy, this Raiders offense, led by Geno Smith, may prove difficult to trust down the stretch. However, Tucker represents the most appealing secondary option and should be added wherever he's still available.

From RotoBaller

Jack Bech Nov 4 1:50pm CT
Jack Bech

Las Vegas Raiders rookie wide receiver Jack Bech did not see the field in Sunday's overtime loss to the Jaguars outside of his 12 special teams snaps. With Jakobi Meyers being dealt to those same Jaguars on Tuesday, there is a theoretical path for Bech to become more involved in a Raiders offense that was seemingly rejuvenated by the return of a healthy Brock Bowers. Unfortunately, even with Bowers and Meyers both missing time earlier this year, Bech's usage has been inconsistent and underwhelming. On a day that fellow rookie Dont'e Thornton was a healthy inactive, Bech was a non-factor, and he's best left for someone else to claim off waivers. This offense is built to run through Bowers, and any secondary role will likely be filled by Tre Tucker or newly acquired veteran Tyler Lockett, who was on the field for nearly 30% of the team's offensive snaps in his first game as a Raider.

From RotoBaller

Quinnen Williams Nov 4 1:30pm CT
Quinnen Williams

The Dallas Cowboys have acquired All-Pro defensive lineman Quinnen Williams from the New York Jets in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick and more. The 27-year-old Williams is coming off three straight Pro Bowl seasons and will look to shore up a Cowboys' defensive front that has allowed 143 rushing yards per game. Dallas reportedly acquired linebacker Logan Wilson from the Bengals earlier on Tuesday, while Williams is the second All-Pro defender dealt away by the Jets after sending cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Colts. While the Cowboys' defense has been a gift for opposing fantasy players, these moves make them less of an every-week target. Meanwhile, the Jets have suddenly become a more appealing matchup, and their fantasy playoff schedule includes games against the Jaguars, Saints, and Patriots.

From RotoBaller

Tyler Shough Nov 4 1:30pm CT
Tyler Shough

New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough went 15-of-24 for 176 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Week 9 loss to the Rams. In his first career start, the rookie showed poise by leading a 71-yard touchdown drive to close out the first half. However, New Orleans struggled to sustain offense throughout the game, finishing with just 16:07 in time of possession compared to Los Angeles' 43:53. Shough appeared to build chemistry with receiver Rashid Shaheed, targeting him nine times, though the speedy wideout was traded to the Seattle Seahawks on trade deadline day. With Shaheed gone, Chris Olave should see an even larger target share moving forward. Next up for Shough and the Saints is a road matchup with a Panthers defense allowing 205.8 passing yards per game, ranking 15th in the league. Shough remains off the fantasy radar for now.

From RotoBaller

Adonai Mitchell Nov 4 1:20pm CT
Adonai Mitchell

As part of the deal that sent All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Colts, the New York Jets acquired second-year wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, who now finds himself on a less crowded depth chart. While the quarterback situation in New York lacks the surprising stability that Daniel Jones has been able to provide for the Colts, the Jets are in need of secondary options in the passing game. Garrett Wilson (knee) will be returning to practice after missing the last two games, but even with his absence, the Jets do not have another wide receiver on the roster with more than 11 catches on the season. Mitchell has spent time in the dog house while in Indianapolis, but his speed and talent are undeniable, and the former 2nd-round pick is worth a stash in deeper leagues.

Brian Thomas Jr. Nov 4 1:13pm CT
Brian Thomas Jr.

Dynasty | The Raiders have traded wide reciever Jakobi Meyers to the Jaguars. Dynasty Analysis: The Raiders are trading wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to the Jaguars in exchange for fourth- and sixth-round draft picks. There were a number of teams reportedly interesting in Meyers, including the Steelers. In the end, the Jaguars give up some real compensation to land receiver help, especially one on an expiring contract. Meyers should give the Jaguars a boost in the passing game while they await the return of Travis Hunter and possibly Brian Thomas Jr. He could put up WR2 numbers right away should that duo be out for any amount of time together.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Adonai Mitchell Nov 4 1:13pm CT
Adonai Mitchell

Dynasty | The Jets acquired Adonai Mitchell in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts. Dynasty Analysis: Mitchell was the smallest part of the deal that sends Sauce Gardner to the Colts in exchange for his services and two first round picks. Mitchell was essentially given up on by the Colts after he fumbled away a touchdown by dropping the ball early in the season and barely played after. He should get all the work he can handle with the Jets and could have some sneaky fantasy appeal. In short, his value was next to nothing and has now risen to at least being worthy of a roster spot in dynasty leagues.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Rashid Shaheed Nov 4 1:13pm CT
Rashid Shaheed

Dynasty | Wide receiver Rashid Shaheed has been traded to the Seattle Seahawks. Dynasty Analysis: A trade of Shaheed almost seemed inevitable as he found himself on a bad team and with an expiring contract. The price tag is real as Seattle sent New Orleans a fourth and fifth round pick, so they may end up attempting to re-sign him. Shaheed should slot in as the deep ball option on a team that's hot, so it's not bad for his short-term value. He still projects more as a "boom or bust" player most weeks but he does have more upside now that he's been reunited with his offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak.

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka Nov 4 12:50pm CT
Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

The Chicago Bears are acquiring defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and a seventh-round draft pick from the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday in exchange for a sixth-rounder, sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter. The move to acquire pass-rusher Tryon-Shoyinka was made after the Bears learned that standout defensive end Dayo Odeyington suffered a season-ending torn Achilles in Sunday's win over the Cincinnati Bengals. The 26-year-old Tryon-Shoyinka, who was the 32nd overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back in 2021 out of the University of Washington, recorded only nine tackles (five solo) in his first eight games with the Browns this year. However, he did have 15 sacks in 66 games (45 starts) in his first four years in the NFL in Tampa. Tryon-Shoyinka should have a bigger role the rest of the year in Chicago.
