NFL roundup: Jalen Hurts injured as Eagles fall to Commanders

Sun Dec 22 10:31pm ET
Field Level Media

Jayden Daniels threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder with six seconds remaining and the Washington Commanders beat the visiting Philadelphia Eagles 36-33 on Sunday.

Philadelphia's Jake Elliott hit a pair of late field goals to give the Eagles -- who lost quarterback Jalen Hurts to a concussion in the first quarter -- a 33-28 lead with 1:58 remaining. Washington (10-5) then went 57 yards in nine plays and added the two-point conversion, a run by Jeremy McNichols.

Daniels finished 24-of-39 passing for 258 yards, a career-high five touchdowns and two interceptions. He ran nine times for 81 yards. Olamide Zaccheus had five catches for 70 yards and two scores as Washington won despite five turnovers.

Saquon Barkley had 29 carries for 150 yards and two scores for the Eagles (12-3), who had won 10 straight. Kenny Pickett was 14-of-24 for 143 yards, one touchdown and one interception in relief of Hurts, and A.J. Brown caught eight passes for 97 yards and a score.

Vikings 27, Seahawks 24

Sam Darnold threw a 39-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline to Justin Jefferson with 3:51 remaining as Minnesota rallied to defeat host Seattle.

The pass capped a four-play, 70-yard drive that took just 30 seconds after Seattle's Geno Smith threw a 4-yard scoring pass to backup tight end AJ Barner to give the Seahawks their first lead of the afternoon. Darnold completed 22 of 35 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns, two to Jefferson -- who had 10 catches for 144 yards.

The Vikings (13-2) won their eighth game in a row and remained tied with Detroit atop the NFC North. The Seahawks (8-7) lost their second straight and dropped a game behind the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West. Smith completed 31 of 43 passes for 314 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions, with Jaxon Smith-Njibga making eight catches for 95 yards and a TD.

Lions 34, Bears 17

Jared Goff passed for 336 yards and three touchdowns and Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 109 yards and a score to boost visiting Detroit to a victory against skidding Chicago.

Detroit (13-2) stayed atop the NFC standings and established a franchise record for victories while outgaining Chicago 475-382. The Bears (4-11) lost their ninth in a row despite Caleb Williams' 334 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Lions receiver Jameson Williams had five catches for 143 yards and a score while Keenan Allen led Chicago with nine catches for 141 yards and a TD. Detroit scored the first 20 points of the game, including 10 that capitalized off Chicago turnovers.

Colts 38, Titans 30

Jonathan Taylor rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries as Indianapolis kept its slim AFC playoff hopes alive by holding off visiting Tennessee.

Indianapolis (7-8) trails the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos by two games for the final wild-card spots. It would have to win the last two games and hope for both teams to lose the last two games in order to have a chance to earn a playoff spot via tiebreakers.

Taylor's performance helped the Colts rush for a team-record 335 yards. Anthony Richardson only had to throw 11 passes, completing seven for 131 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He added 70 yards and a score on the ground. For Tennessee (3-12), Mason Rudolph completed 23 of 34 passes for 252 yards with two scores and three picks.

Dolphins 29, 49ers 17

Jason Sanders kicked five field goals and De'Von Achane accounted for 190 total yards from scrimmage and the clinching touchdown in Miami's win over visiting San Francisco in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Tua Tagovailoa completed 22 of 34 passes for 215 yards and a score for Miami (7-8). Achane rushed for 120 yards on 17 carries, including a 50-yard touchdown run with 1:36 left, and caught six passes for 70 yards. The Dolphins must win their last two games, hope for two losses from the Los Angeles Chargers and get other help to perhaps earn the final AFC wild-card spot.

Brock Purdy hit on 26 of 40 passes for 313 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for San Francisco (6-9). He found Eric Saubert for a 2-yard score with 12:02 remaining to pull the 49ers within 19-17, but they couldn't get over the hump after being eliminated from the playoff race before the game.

Bills 27, Patriots 24

James Cook finished with 126 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns, and Buffalo Bills escaped with a win over New England in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Josh Allen completed 16 of 29 passes for 154 yards, one touchdown and one interception for Buffalo (12-3). Allen also carried the ball six times for 30 yards as the Bills won for the ninth time in their past 10 games.

Drake Maye completed 22 of 36 passes for 261 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for New England (3-12). Rhamondre Stevenson had 12 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown, and Kayshon Boutte and Hunter Henry each caught a touchdown pass.

Falcons 34, Giants 7

Michael Penix Jr. completed 18 of 27 passes for 202 yards in his first career start, helping Atlanta rout visiting New York.

Penix, who was named starter following Kirk Cousins' benching, also threw an interception. Bijan Robinson ran 22 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns, as the Falcons (8-7) won their second straight following a four-game losing streak. Darnell Mooney had five receptions for 82 yards, while Jessie Bates III and Matthew Judon each returned interceptions for touchdowns.

For New York (2-13), Drew Lock completed 22 of 39 passes for a touchdown and two interceptions, as the Giants dropped their 10th straight game -- setting a franchise record. Malik Nabers hauled in seven passes for 68 yards.

Bengals 24, Browns 6

Joe Burrow tossed three touchdown passes and the defense forced a key early turnover to lead Cincinnati over visiting Cleveland.

Ja'Marr Chase broke his own single-season franchise receiving yards mark and finished the day with six catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. The Bengals (7-8), who forced and recovered a fumble at the goal line on Cleveland's first possession, won their third straight game and stayed in playoff contention.

Cleveland quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, making his fourth career start and first this season, completed just 20 of 34 passes for 157 yards. He was sacked five times and threw two fourth-quarter interceptions. Myles Garrett sacked Burrow in the second quarter, allowing the star pass rusher to reach the 100-sack milestone in just his 115th career game.

Rams 19, Jets 9

Tyler Higbee caught the tiebreaking touchdown catch in his season debut and Kyren Williams rushed for 122 yards and one score as Los Angeles defeated New York in East Rutherford, N.J.

Matthew Stafford was 14-of-19 passing for 110 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Rams (9-6), who won for the eighth time in their last 10 games and took sole possession of first place in the NFC West.

Aaron Rodgers completed 28 of 42 passes for 256 yards and one touchdown, the 499th of his career, for New York (4-11).

Panthers 36, Cardinals 30 (OT)

Chuba Hubbard ran 21 yards for an overtime touchdown and Bryce Young threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Carolina ended Arizona's playoff prospects by winning its home finale in Charlotte, N.C.

Hubbard, who had a 28-yard run on the play prior to his winning rush, compiled 152 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries as the Panthers (4-11) halted a four-game losing streak. Young was 17-for-26 for 158 yards in the air and gained 68 yards on five rushing attempts.

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was 20-for-32 for 202 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Cardinals (7-8). James Conner gained 117 rushing yards on 15 carries before leaving with a knee injury and Chad Ryland booted three field goals, including a tying 58-yarder on the last play of regulation.

Raiders 19, Jaguars 15

Brock Bowers caught 11 passes for 99 yards and Isaiah Pola-Mao forced two fumbles to lead host Las Vegas to a win over Jacksonville.

The Raiders ended a league-high 10-game losing streak with their first win since beating the Cleveland Browns 20-16 on Sept. 29. Ameer Abdullah ran for 38 yards and a go-ahead touchdown on seven carries as the Raiders ran for 69 yards as a team. Aidan O'Connell finished with 257 yards on 24-of-38 passing.

Brian Thomas Jr. led the Jaguars with 132 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown, on nine receptions, while Parker Washington tallied six receptions for 54 yards. Mac Jones threw for 247 yards and a touchdown on 25-of-39 passing, and Bigsby led Jacksonville with 50 rushing yards and a score on 12 carries.

Bender's Starts/Sits: Week 16

Player Notes
Cooper Rush Dec 23 1:10am ET
Cooper Rush

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush completed 26 of 35 pass attempts for 292 yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions during Sunday's Week 16 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He took just one sack in the effort. All in all, this was a solid showing for Rush. While fantasy managers would have liked to see him pad his stats with one more touchdown, it's tough to complain about nearly 300 yards and turnover-free football. The 31-year-old signal-caller helped fantasy managers in a huge way on Sunday night, but his path gets much tougher next week against a Philadelphia Eagles secondary that has been one of the NFL's best this year.

From RotoBaller

Tyler Allgeier Dec 23 1:00am ET
Tyler Allgeier

Atlanta Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier logged 11 carries in Sunday's 34-7 win over the Giants as the offense leaned heavily on the run game in Michael Penix Jr.'s first start, however, the 24-year-old managed to gain just 22 scoreless yards (2.0 YPR) on those opportunities. Meanwhile, backfield mate Bijan Robinson was able to gain 94 yards on 22 attempts (4.3 YPR) and found paydirt twice. Allgeier added one catch for nine yards in the contest, but overall it was a bland performance so hopefully managers still alive in the fantasy playoffs were able to find other worthy substitutes if needed. The BYU product gets a juicy matchup versus the Commanders' rush defense that is one of the worst in the league in yielding fantasy production to running backs, but the third-year pro is likely no better than a low-end flex play in Week 17.

From RotoBaller

Ryan Miller Dec 23 1:00am ET
Ryan Miller

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Ryan Miller caught two passes for 17 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's Week 16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The Furman product has not been a dependable fantasy option this season, but he has shown promise at times. In Week 8, he converted five targets into three receptions. The next week, he caught his first career touchdown. One week later, he played 85 percent of the snaps. As the Buccaneers scrambled to replace Chris Godwin (ankle), Miller was one of the candidates to get more involved, but he's still a few rungs below players like Jalen McMillan, Sterling Shepard, and Trey Palmer in the pecking order.

From RotoBaller

Ray-Ray McCloud Dec 23 1:00am ET
Ray-Ray McCloud

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud III was limited to just 19 yards in Sunday's 34-7 win over the Giants, hauling in three of the four targets he saw from rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. It wasn't a great day for fantasy for the Falcon wideouts in the young QBs first start as Atlanta leaned heavily on the rushing attack with the running backs logging 33 attempts in the contest. Now, after a three-game stretch of heavier-than-normal involvement, McCloud III has had back-to-back duds with a total of four catches for 33 yards combined in the last two games. The 28-year-old will get a somewhat easier matchup in Week 17 versus a middle-of-the-road Washington pass defense, but hopefully managers have other options at this point.

From RotoBaller

Bucky Irving Dec 23 12:50am ET
Bucky Irving

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving rushed for 68 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries during Sunday's Week 16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He also caught all three of his targets for an additional 24 yards through the air. Although the Buccaneers were upset on the road by the Cowboys, Irving still had a good game, breaking several tackles and scoring a touchdown to keep his fantasy managers happy. Perhaps most importantly, he had 16 carries while Rachaad White had just three. It's safe to say that Irving has officially taken over as the Buccaneers' primary ball-carrier, and he'll continue to rank as a high-end RB2 option in fantasy football going forward. He should be started in all leagues when the Buccaneers take on the Carolina Panthers next week.

From RotoBaller

Josh Downs Dec 23 12:50am ET
Josh Downs

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs caught three of four targets for 61 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 38-30 win over the Titans. While it doesn't sound like much, the three catches were a team-high and so were the targets and the yardage total as quarterback Anthony Richardson was asked to throw the ball just 11 times in the game while the rushing attack racked up 335 yards. The 23-year-old has three catches in three consecutive games and at least three in 11 of the 12 games he's played, giving him a reliable floor. However, with meager yardage totals more often than not and sporadic TDs, it'll be hard to trust him next week in fantasy championships as anything more than a WR3 in a showdown with the Giants. New York has been surprisingly good at limiting wide receivers in fantasy production, perhaps in part because they are awful against the run, so Richardson and Jonathan Taylor will likely be relied upon to carry the load again.

From RotoBaller

Payne Durham Dec 23 12:50am ET
Payne Durham

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Payne Durham caught five of his seven targets for 29 yards during Sunday's Week 16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The 24-year-old has primarily operated in a depth role for most of this season, but he was given increased opportunities to produce this week with Cade Otton (knee) sidelined. A product of Purdue, Durham more than doubled his season-long production on Sunday night alone, but he'll likely return to a depth role off the fantasy radar if Otton returns in Week 17 against the Carolina Panthers.

From RotoBaller

Jalen McMillan Dec 23 12:50am ET
Jalen McMillan

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Jalen McMillan caught five of his seven targets for 57 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's Week 16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The rookie has been a terrific contributor for Tampa Bay this season, filling in admirably as the team's No. 2 wide receiver with Chris Godwin (ankle) done for the year. McMillan has come on particularly strong lately, catching 14 passes for 191 yards and four touchdowns over his last three games. He has found the end zone in three consecutive contests, cementing himself as a very strong WR3/FLEX option moving forward. He should continue to be started in most leagues ahead of next week's matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

From RotoBaller

Ricky Pearsall Dec 23 12:50am ET
Ricky Pearsall

San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was marginally involved during a 29-17 loss to the Dolphins in Miami on Sunday. The first-round pick caught all four of his targets for 37 yards. After missing the early part of the year due to a gunshot wound, Pearsall's production escalated each game from Week 7 to Week 10, culminating in a 17.3 half-PPR performance at Tampa Bay. Any fantasy optimism quickly fizzled out though, as Pearsall then recorded three straight goose eggs. Sunday's modest performance was the most productive Pearsall has been since the aforementioned Bucs game. The 49ers will almost certainly need to make full use of their passing attack in Week 17 when the Detroit Lions bring an elite offense to Levi's Stadium, but Pearsall will be nothing more than a deep-league prayer, barring an injury ahead of him.

From RotoBaller

Mike Evans Dec 23 12:40am ET
Mike Evans

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans caught just five of his eight targets for 69 yards during Sunday's Week 16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Evans was the Buccaneers' leading receiver, but managers would have liked to see him rack up a little more production or find the end zone with a potential berth in the fantasy championship on the line. For the veteran receiver, all eyes are on the 1,000-yard mark. Evans has eclipsed 1,000 yards in each of his first 10 NFL seasons, but he's not a lock to reach that threshold in 2024. The 31-year-old needs 182 yards over his final two games to achieve the big milestone. From a fantasy perspective, he should continue to be viewed as a low-end WR1 option heading into next week's battle with a subpar Carolina Panthers defense.

From RotoBaller

Baker Mayfield Dec 23 12:30am ET
Baker Mayfield

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 31 of 43 pass attempts for 303 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception during Sunday's Week 16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He also took four sacks and rushed for 42 yards. Finally, Mayfield fumbled once, but he was able to pick up the loose ball. All in all, Mayfield had a solid showing, but it wasn't enough to propel Tampa Bay over Dallas. The 29-year-old ranks as a top-six fantasy quarterback this season with his 3,920 yards, 37 total touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. Fantasy managers should view him as a top option among quarterbacks when he takes on a subpar Carolina Panthers defense in Week 17, coinciding with most fantasy leagues' championships.

From RotoBaller

Anthony Richardson Dec 23 12:30am ET
Anthony Richardson

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson was responsible for two touchdowns in Sunday's 38-30 win over the Titans, rushing for one and throwing for another in the contest. The 22-year-old was asked to throw just 11 times with Jonathan Taylor running wild for 218 yards on the Tennessee defense. As a result, Richardson was able to complete over 50% of his passes for just the second time this season, going 7-for-11 for 131 yards and a 1:1 TD:INT. Taylor wasn't the only one to see success on the ground, as Richardson rushed nine times for 70 yards as well. Week 17 brings another favorable matchup for the former first-round draft pick, with the Colts taking on the Giants. Indy is still alive in the AFC playoff race, so look for a similar game plan next week where the second-year pro likely doesn't offer much production through the air but provides a decent floor with his legs as the Colts try to stay in contention, leaving him as a volatile QB2 next Sunday.

From RotoBaller

Rachaad White Dec 23 12:30am ET
Rachaad White

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Rachaad White rushed for 10 yards on three carries during Sunday's Week 16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. More importantly, he caught seven of his eight targets for an additional 50 yards through the air. This showing helped fantasy managers in PPR leagues, but his production was arguably all for naught as he coughed up a game-losing fumble in the final minutes of Sunday Night Football. Given that White registered just three carries to Bucky Irving's 16, he'll likely need to maintain a very large role in the passing game in order to have fantasy value going forward. With that said, pass-catching productivity hasn't been an issue so far for White, who has scored more than eight fantasy points (PPR) in all but one of his games this year. The 25-year-old is an appealing RB2 or RB3 option heading into Week 17 against the Carolina Panthers. When he last faced Carolina, White had a whopping 6.9 yards per carry but caught just one pass.

From RotoBaller

George Kittle Dec 23 12:30am ET
George Kittle

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle delivered another solid performance during a Week 16 loss to the Dolphins in Miami on Sunday. The two-time first-team All-Pro took a co-team-leading nine targets to pace the 49ers in receptions (8) and receiving yards (106). Besides missing two games with injury, Kittle has been extremely reliable this season, surpassing half-PPR Yahoo projections in 10-of-13 starts. One would imagine that Kittle will be well-represented among fantasy teams vying for championships in Week 17 when the 49ers host the Detroit Lions. Kittle will be a no-brainer start in that one regardless of matchup but should be played with increased confidence as the Lions' prolific offense is likely to force the 49ers to make heavy use of their passing attack.

From RotoBaller

Darnell Mooney Dec 23 12:10am ET
Darnell Mooney

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Darnell Mooney was the team's leading receiver on Sunday with five receptions for 82 yards but was unable to find the end zone as Bijan Robinson punched in both of Atlanta's offensive touchdowns in the lopsided 34-7 win. Drake London also caught five passes but totaled just 59 yards on his receptions. He also left the game in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury, although coach Raheem Morris stated after the game that London could have gone back in, however, with a comfortable lead there was no reason for him to reenter. Mooney is nearing his first 1000-yard season since 2021, and can likely still be trusted again next week with the chemistry he showed with Michael Penix Jr., but in the matchup with Washington he is probably a WR3 at best. Managers will want to monitor London's status throughout the week, and if the hamstring injury were to cause him to miss time, then Mooney could be in line for a few more targets.

From RotoBaller

T.J. Hockenson Dec 22 11:50pm ET
T.J. Hockenson

Minnesota Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson caught 2-of-5 targets in Sunday's 27-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks. The sixth-year pro was used sparsely on a day where wide receiver Justin Jefferson commanded most of quarterback Sam Darnold's attention (10/144/2). Otherwise, all other Vikings pass-catchers combined for just 12 receptions and 102 yards against a Seattle defense that hung tough most of the afternoon. It's another disappointing performance for Hockenson. The former Iowa Hawkeye has had two nice games in which he combined for 15 receptions and 186 yards. However, he's recorded only 19 catches and 192 yards in the other six. Things will get a bit easier for him in Week 17 against a Green Bay Packers defense that had allowed the eighth-most fantasy points per game to TEs ahead of this weekend. For now, though, fantasy managers may want to consider Hockenson as more of a TE2 with upside.

From RotoBaller

Michael Penix Jr. Dec 22 11:40pm ET
Michael Penix Jr.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. led the Falcons to victory on Sunday in a 34-7 thrashing of the New York Giants, however, it was the run game and defense that was truly responsible for the win. Penix Jr. was 18-for-27 (67%) for 202 yards, but did not throw a touchdown and he tossed one interception, while the Falcons scored two TDs via the rush and the defense had two pick-sixes. The rookie QB wasn't asked to do too much and didn't really need to; look for more of the same next week when the Falcons take on the Commanders in D.C. in a game with playoff implications for both teams. The Commanders have been solid against the pass but not so much against the run, with one of the most fantasy-friendly rush defenses in the NFL. Saquon Barkley just ran for 150 yards and two scores against them in Week 16, so look for Bijan Robinson to carry the load next Sunday, likely leaving Penix Jr. as a low-end QB2 again in Week 17.

From RotoBaller

Mike Gesicki Dec 22 11:40pm ET
Mike Gesicki

Cincinnati Bengals tight end Mike Gesicki had two catches for 14 yards in Sunday's win over the Browns. The veteran had another underwhelming showing in Week 16. However, that's not surprising with Joe Burrow primarily focused on feeding Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Chase Brown. With that in mind, Gesicki should continue to have a tough time getting involved moving ahead, keeping him off the radar for fantasy managers when the Bengals play the Broncos in Week 17.

From RotoBaller

Sterling Shepard Dec 22 11:30pm ET
Sterling Shepard

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Sterling Shepard (hamstring) injured his hamstring in the Sunday night game against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 16 and was ruled out. It was a frustrating night for anyone that used Shepard in their starting fantasy lineups in deeper leagues, as he ends up finishing the contest with only one reception on three targets for 20 yards. The 31-year-old veteran pass-catcher injured his hamstring during a run in the third quarter. If he is unable to play in Week 17 versus the division-rival Carolina Panthers in a good matchup, Trey Palmer would most likely serve as Tampa's No. 3 wideout behind Mike Evans and rookie Jalen McMillan. Shepard came into the Week 16 game on Sunday night outside of the top 50 receivers in half-PPR points scored per game this year, so he hasn't been much more than a bye-week streamer, even with Chris Godwin (ankle) out for the season.

From RotoBaller

Deebo Samuel Dec 22 11:30pm ET
Deebo Samuel

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. finally broke out of a five-game slump during a 29-17 defeat to the Dolphins in Miami on Sunday. Samuel Sr. caught seven of a co-team-high nine targets for 96 yards and a touchdown. He added five rushing attempts for 25 yards. Samuel Sr. looked angry and determined with his touches for the first time in weeks, scoring his 16-yard touchdown by running through three defenders. It's probably too little, too late for Samuel Sr.'s fantasy managers who suffered through five consecutive weeks of sub-five-point half-PPR performances, but anyone still rostering Samuel Sr. now has to at least consider him for a start in Week 17 coming off his most productive game of the season. San Francisco gets the offensive powerhouse Detroit Lions in Santa Clara on Monday night, which should force the 49ers into a pass-heavy game script, with a similar amount of carries to Sunday if rookie running back Isaac Guerendo (foot, hamstring) misses another game.
