Browns QB Deshaun Watson on mission to prove doubters wrong

Thu Apr 10 1:45pm ET
Field Level Media

Deshaun Watson might miss part or all of the 2025 season and hears the whispers of his demise as doubts multiply about his ability to rediscover the form that tempted the Cleveland Browns into acquiring him from the Houston Texans three years ago.

Watson is recovering from a pair of Achilles tendon surgeries in a span of less than four months. He played in 19 of a possible 51 games with the Browns since being acquired from the Texans in March 2022, a deal Cleveland made despite the quarterback being accused of committing sexual improprieties by more than two dozen massage therapists in the Houston area.

Even Browns owner Jimmy Haslam went on the record last month to label the trade a "swing and miss," a major revelation considering it came from the individual approving Watson's checks.

Watson posted a brief video addressing the doubters on Thursday.

"Everyone is doubting me. Everyone don't believe in me," Watson said in a video posted to Instagram. "Everyone don't think I can get back to where I was. But I know, and I believe the work that I put in, that I believe in myself. ... I know, I'm gonna be way better than before."

The Browns acquired Watson in exchange for first-round draft picks in 2022, 2023 and 2024, along with a 2023 third-round pick, and fourth-round picks in 2022 and 2024. In return, they received Watson -- 9-10 as a starter with the Browns -- and a 2024 sixth-round pick.

The Browns finally are back in the first round of the draft and hold the No. 2 overall pick in the April 24 draft. With only Watson and recently acquired Kenny Pickett on the roster, Cleveland has a hole to dig out of, according to Haslam.

Before he played a game for the Browns, the franchise signed Watson, who then had three Pro Bowl selections to his credit, to a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract. He is still owed $92 million.

"We took a big swing and miss with Deshaun," Haslam said last month. "We thought we had the quarterback, we didn't, and we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him. So we've got to dig ourselves out of that hole. (It) was an entire organization decision and it ends with Dee (Haslam, Jimmy's wife and franchise co-owner) and I, so hold us accountable."

Omarion Hampton Apr 10 2:30pm ET
Omarion Hampton

The New York Giants are hosting North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton on a visit Thursday, according to NFL.com. The team is reportedly doing work on running back prospects ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, and Hampton is largely viewed as the RB2 in the class behind Boise State's Ashton Jeanty. That said, he is expected to be picked in the back half of the first round, so the Giants would likely need to trade back into Round 1 if they have a shot to land him. Hampton posted over 1,500 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns in each of his last two collegiate seasons and could be a true workhorse at the next level. Tyrone Tracy Jr. impressed as a rookie for the G-Men, but the organization could be looking to add a true difference-maker at the position after losing Saquon Barkley last offseason.

Cam Ward Apr 10 2:30pm ET
Cam Ward

The Tennessee Titans are overwhelmingly expected to pick Miami quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Ward will give Tennessee its potential franchise quarterback, but the team still needs to address the wide receiver spot behind Calvin Ridley, who posted over 1,000 yards in his first year with the organization. According to ESPN's Matt Miller, Tennessee is expected to be aggressive in adding a wideout and could trade back into the first round to land Missouri's Luther Burden III or Ohio State's Emeka Egbuka. The two pass-catchers were all-conference performers in the SEC and Big Ten, respectively last season. That said, one or both wide receivers could be available with the Titans' No. 35 overall pick, so all options are on the table.

Bo Nix Apr 10 2:00pm ET
Bo Nix

University of Baylor wide receiver Hal Presley visited with the Denver Broncos this week, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. Presley isn't one of the bigger names in the receiver draft class this year, but the Broncos could look to target the 6-foot-3, 210-pounder in the later rounds of this year's draft as they look to add weapons on offense for impressive young quarterback Bo Nix. Presley finished his senior year with Baylor in 2024 with 31 catches for 429 yards and three touchdowns. Denver currently has Courtland Sutton as their unquestioned WR1, but they could use additional depth at the position alongside Marvin Mims Jr., Devaughn Vele and Troy Franklin. The Broncos also added tight end Evan Engram in free agency, and he could end up being one of the most targeted pass-catchers in 2025.

Montez Sweat Apr 10 1:50pm ET
Montez Sweat

Texas A&M pass-rusher Shemar Stewart is scheduled to visit with the Chicago Bears, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. In addition to the Bears, Stewart has been closely linked to the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons during the pre-draft process. Sports Illustrated has Stewart projected to the 49ers in the first round at the end of this month. The 21-year-old defensive end only had 4.5 sacks in three college seasons, but he's extremely gifted athletically and stands at 6-foot-5, 267 pounds and ran a 4.59-second 40-yard dash. The Miami native has a rare combination of six, length and explosiveness as a pass-rusher, but he'll need to be coached up to better utilize his athleticism so that he can be more productive at the NFL level. Chicago is in need of adding some pass-rushing help alongside Montez Sweat.

Kyle McCord Apr 10 1:40pm ET
Kyle McCord

The Pittsburgh Steelers will host a visit for Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord next week, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. It comes after the Steelers will meet with University of Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders on Thursday. Pittsburgh has Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson in their QB room at the moment, and veteran Aaron Rodgers is leaning toward signing with the team eventually, but the Steelers continue to do their due diligence at the position leading up to this year's NFL draft. Even if Rodgers signs before the draft, it would be a surprise if Pittsburgh didn't select a signal-caller in the draft. McCord went off in 2024 with 4,779 passing yards and 34 touchdowns, but he's unlikely to come off the board in this year's draft until Day 3.

Isaiah Bond Apr 10 1:40pm ET
Isaiah Bond

University of Texas wide receiver Isaiah Bond is scheduled to visit with the Atlanta Falcons on Friday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. In addition to the Falcons for their local prospect day, Bond has visits scheduled with the Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans. The Bills already worked him out privately and had dinner with him. The 21-year-old ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine in February and caught 34 passes for 540 yards and five touchdowns in 2024 for the Longhorns. Bond was in the shadow of receiver Matthew Golden at Texas, and Golden is projected as a clear first-round pick this year. Drake London is Atlanta's clear No. 1 receiver, but Bond would give the team another option alongside Ray-Ray McCloud III and Darnell Mooney in 2025 and beyond.

T.J. Watt Apr 10 1:30pm ET
T.J. Watt

Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt, who is entering the final year of his contract in 2025, is currently negotiating a new deal with the team, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. For what it's worth, Watt revealed an Instagram post on Wednesday of him flashing a peace sign, perhaps indicating a rocky start to the negotiations. The 30-year-old was a Pro Bowler for the seventh straight season in 2024 and had 61 tackles (40 solo), 11.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, 27 QB hits and a league-leading six forced fumbles in 17 regular-season starts. He dropped down in the sack department after leading the league with 19 in 2024, but Watt still led the Steelers in sacks and remained a must-start in IDP fantasy leagues, finishing third in fantasy points as a defensive lineman. Although Watt and the Steelers might not be close to an extension right now, we'd be surprised if they don't get something done.

Allen Lazard Apr 10 1:20pm ET
Allen Lazard

The New York Jets and wide receiver Allen Lazard agreed on Thursday to a revised contract for the 2025 season that will result in $8.5 million in salary cap savings, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations. Lazard was scheduled to earn $11 million in 2025, but he'll be taking an $8.5 million pay cut to stay under contract with the team this year. $1.75 million of his salary for the year is guaranteed, and he'll become a free agent in 2026. The 29-year-old pass-catcher signed a four-year, $44 million deal with the Jets as a free agent in 2023, but he ended up being a bust and had a 23-311-1 line in 14 games in his first year. Lazard improved in 2024, catching 37 of 60 targets for 530 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games, but it wasn't enough to justify his salary. He has struggled with drops and won't be guaranteed a role as the No. 2 behind Garrett Wilson in 2025 without his buddy Aaron Rodgers in town.

Bryce Young Apr 10 1:10pm ET
Bryce Young

The Carolina Panthers showed plenty of progress once quarterback Bryce Young got back on the field in his sophomore year in 2024, and he said he's ready "to continue to build and grow" in 2025. It should help that he'll have the same offensive line, same set of receivers and the same coaching staff. It's the first time the Panthers have gone into a season with the same QB, coach and general manager since 2019, and the stability will be a good thing for Young. The 23-year-old former first overall pick looked like a different signal-caller when he returned as the starter in Week 8, completing 61.8% of his pass attempts for 2,104 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also had game-tying or game-winning drives in six of the final nine games. Young will be a QB2 with upside in fantasy, but he has the ability to take the next step in Year 3.

Matt Gay Apr 10 1:10pm ET
Matt Gay

The Indianapolis Colts released kicker Matt Gay on Thursday, just two seasons after signing him to a big free-agent deal, according to The 33rd Team's Ari Meirov. In his time with the Colts, Gay went 64-for-78 on his field-goal attempts (11-for-22 from 50-plus yards) and made 68 of his 69 extra-point attempts in 33 games. The 31-year-old signed a four-year, $22.5 million deal with Indy before the 2023 season. Gay made 31 of his 37 field-goal tries in 16 regular-season games last year, including only three of his nine attempts from 50-plus yards. While he was pretty consistent in his time with the Colts, it appears his success rate from long range wasn't good enough to keep him around. Spencer Shrader is currently the kicker on the team's roster, but they'll likely add competition for him heading into training camp this summer.

Kaleb Johnson Apr 10 12:20am ET
Kaleb Johnson

University of Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson had a top-30 visit with the New York Giants on Wednesday, according to his Instagram account. The Giants continue to do their homework on a deep class of running backs with the 2025 NFL draft just around the corner. The Bergen Record's Art Stapleton also reported that Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough recently visited with the Giants after visiting with the Cleveland Browns. Tyrone Tracy Jr. took over the lead-back role from Devin Singletary in his rookie season in 2024 and was impressive with his big-play ability, but he also had fumbling issues and could be asked to share more of the workload in his sophomore season if the G-Men add a notable back in this year's draft. Johnson is more of a powerful, between-the-tackles runner who had 1,537 rushing yards in his final year at Iowa in 2024.

Jalen Milroe Apr 10 12:10am ET
Jalen Milroe

University of Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe is making the rounds in terms of visits with the 2025 NFL draft just a couple weeks away, as he has upcoming pre-draft visits scheduled with the New York Giants, Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks after meeting with the Cleveland Browns earlier this week, sources told FOX Sports' Jordan Schultz. Milroe's name has been gaining steam in recent weeks, and he could have his name called by the end of the first round later this month. The Browns are the most QB-needy team mentioned above, but the Giants, Rams and Seahawks could also be eyeing a signal-caller on Day 2 or 3 of the draft that could sit and learn behind a veteran for a year. Similar to Colts QB Anthony Richardson, who was an early first-round pick several years ago, Milroe's rushing ability is intriguing, but he might be more of a project as a passer.

Tyreek Hill Apr 9 7:30pm ET
Tyreek Hill

Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team reports that per Sunny Isles Police Department, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill has not committed a crime, and the investigation of a domestic incident involving him has already been closed. The veteran was apparently engaged in some domestic dispute on Wednesday with his wife at their high-rise condominium in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida. Exactly what occurred is unclear, but the police were called after Hill reportedly threw a laptop. Fortunately, the 31-year-old was able to avoid trouble, as this would be just another incident in a string of off-the-field issues for him dating back to last year. After a down 2024, Hill's price in fantasy drafts this summer should be lower than in years past. It's possible he's lost a step at his age, but a productive season is very much still in his range of outcomes.

Trevor Lawrence Apr 9 2:50pm ET
Trevor Lawrence

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence (shoulder) will be limited during OTAs this offseason, but the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft said he is optimistic he will be full-go for training camp. Lawrence underwent offseason shoulder surgery to fix a left AC joint sprain. He missed seven games last season due to shoulder and head injuries, limiting him to 2,045 passing yards and 11 passing touchdowns. The Jaguars are in the middle of a soft roster rebuild under new general manager James Gladstone and head coach Liam Coen. Brian Thomas Jr. looks like the clear WR1 of the future, but the team will need to address the WR2 and TE spots after moving on from Christian Kirk and Evan Engram following the 2025 campaign. Lawrence is unlikely to have QB1 upside in fantasy football next season.

Devin Lloyd Apr 9 2:40pm ET
Devin Lloyd

The Jacksonville Jaguars have "no plans right now" to pick up linebacker Devin Lloyd's fifth-year option, according to head coach Liam Coen. According to NFL.com, the team is still working to get to know Lloyd before deciding on the 2022 first-round pick. Since being taken with the No. 27 overall pick, Lloyd has racked up 335 tackles (195 solo), two sacks, one forced fumble, four fumble recoveries, four interceptions, 19 pass deflections, and 22.5 run stuffs in 48 career games. The Jaguars are in the middle of a soft rebuild under a new regime, so the organization will continue to be meticulous with its personnel decisions.

Quinn Ewers Apr 9 2:20pm ET
Quinn Ewers

Former University of Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is visiting with the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday, according to NFL insider Mike Garafolo. The organization has Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones on the roster but could be interested in adding a mid-round rookie given the struggles of Richardson and Jones so far. Ewers began his career at Ohio State before transferring to Texas, where he played in 36 games for the Longhorns. The Texas native threw for 9,128 yards, 68 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions and led Texas to two consecutive College Football Playoff Semifinal appearances. Ewers once had first-round hype, but he'll likely be picked anywhere from the second round to the fifth round in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Asante Samuel Jr. Apr 9 1:50pm ET
Asante Samuel Jr.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo said that concerns about cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.'s (neck, shoulder) medicals have really put a damper on his free-agent market this offseason. Garafolo believes that Samuel would have already signed by now if there weren't concerns about injuries that limited him to a career-low four games played in 2024 with the Los Angeles Chargers. The 25-year-old did take a visit to the Arizona Cardinals this offseason, but he remains on the open market with the NFL draft right around the corner. The former second-round pick (47th overall) in 2021 by the Chargers out of Florida State is still young and has plenty of ability when healthy, so he should eventually land with a team once he's recovered from his injuries. In his first three years with the Bolts, Samuel had 163 tackles (137 solo), six interceptions, 35 pass breakups and a fumble recovery in 46 games (43 starts).

DeMarvion Overshown Apr 9 1:40pm ET
DeMarvion Overshown

Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (knee) has been progressing well in his recovery from a significant knee injury, and there is optimism that he could return around the middle of the 2025 season, sources tell FOX Sports' Jordan Schultz. Overshown was having a breakout campaign in 2024 before his knee injury, piling up 84 tackles, five sacks, an interception, a forced fumble, one fumble recovery, eight tackles for loss and a defensive touchdown in the first 13 games (12 starts) of his NFL career. The 24-year-old former third-rounder (90th overall) in 2023 out of Texas had surgery to fix ACL, MCL and PCL tears in his right knee on Dec. 18. The Cowboys will just be hoping that Overshown will be able to show the same type of burst he had as a pass-rusher in his rookie year when he returns from his serious knee injury. Fantasy managers in single-year IDP formats can ignore Overshown to begin the season.

Trevon Diggs Apr 9 1:40pm ET
Trevon Diggs

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said that cornerback Trevon Diggs (knee) might not be ready for the start of the 2025 regular season this fall. Diggs had surgery on his left knee in late January, putting his status firmly in doubt for Week 1, especially since it's the same knee the 26-year-old defensive back suffered an ACL tear in back in 2023. In addition to his knee injury, Diggs also dealt with ankle, calf and foot injuries in 2024 and was limited to 11 starts, recording 42 tackles (35 solo), two interceptions and 11 pass breakups in his fifth year in Dallas. The former second-round selection (51st overall) in 2020 out of Alabama was a first-team All-Pro in 2021 when he had a league-high 11 interceptions. Since then, though, Diggs has had six picks in 30 games and has been saddled by injuries the last two seasons.

Matthew Golden Apr 9 1:30pm ET
Matthew Golden

The Green Bay Packers are expected to hose University of Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden for a top-30 visit soon, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Silverstein. The 5-foot-11, 191-pounder showed blazing speed (4.29-second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine) and is in contention to be the first wideout taken in this year's NFL draft at the end of the month. The 21-year-old pass-catcher also had a formal interview with the Packers at the combine. Golden had 58 catches for 987 yards and nine touchdowns last year at Texas and could be an immediate deep threat in Green Bay in his rookie year with Christian Watson (knee) potentially missing half the year. Although there's no guarantee the Packers will take a receiver in the first round, it's clear they will address the position in the draft, as they are also meeting with Texas WR Isaiah Bond.
